I think Zhao has a bit of a royalty fetish.  Just sort of an outcropping of that lust for power of his.  Thinky-thought, anyway.

I WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED. I get that vibe with his interactions with Zuko and Iroh. Also, I am so sad that we never really got to see Zhao and Azula interact in canon, especially once she hit puberty. I'm sure that it would have been FASCINATING. ;)

I think Zuko knows his place and doesn't quite want to be a ruler. He much prefers glory over the throne. But that doesn't mean he doesn't have a royalty fetish. Zhao with anyone in the Royal Family (Iroh, Ozai, Lu Ten, Ursa, Zuko, or Azula) wouldn't make me too disappointed. (Even if I believe Zhao crosses the line at 14 year old girls.)

Wrong culture, Azula should be at a marriageable age in the A:tla-verse but she, and Ozai, are probably waiting for a candidate good enough

I figure sixteen is probably considered the 'proper' marrying and/or fooling around age, but betrothals and official-type matches can be put into place well before-hand if it's considered important enough.

Ummmmm... Yeah, no crap. He has this weird sort of love/hate thing going on with royalty too. He has to prove himself better than Zuko while simultaneously trying to court Iroh's favor. Seriously, the man regards a homeless sixteen year old as his primary rival. *shakes head* Plus he keeps boasting to Zuko, moreso than he does with everyone else. I could rewrite them as Belle and Gaston if the world needed more crack.

Oddly, I'm writing Long Feng with a royalty fetish. It's fun.
