The AU:  Sun Child, in which Princess Zura was pregnant when she was banished from the Fire Nation.  Now she roams the world with a child in tow, seeking the Avatar as the key to redemption- for her, and her daughter...

The Prompt/Summary:
  Lt. Jee babysits Lan Min.

The Fic-

This is Lt. Jee.

Lt. Jee is a very fierce man with a fierce mustache and an even fiercer vocabulary.  When he finds something amiss, sailor-boys tremble and grown men shiver in their shorts.

Lt. Jee is also charged with the duty of tending his royal captain’s infant daughter when she is ashore on business.  This means that he goes about with the tiny girl strapped to his chest, a solemn burden and joyful ward.  She goes everywhere with him, and is probably one of the few who will be able to legitimately say she learned to sail before she learned to walk.

Of course, when her mother the princess returns from her business ashore, and puts aside her armor and her own fearsome temper, she hugs her daughter tight and asks, what new words did she learn today?

The answer has Jee standing before the captain, receiving some fierce vocabulary of his own.

So now when Lt. Jee’s about his duties, he does not swear, not even at the ensigns or midshipmen (who can be very annoying).  Now what he does, is point to the small, widely curious girl chewing on a toy as she dangles firmly harnessed from his chest.

He points out exactly what has been done wrong, and why it is such a bad idea on a ship.  He explains the million and one ways the ocean can kill them even when everything is running exactly right on the ship.  And then he asks them if they feel at all right, contributing to the level of risk and danger this little girl, this darling young princess of theirs will face.

The crew really wishes he would go back to swearing.

^^ sometimes, you'd much rather a large man yelling at you than face the puppy eyes.

I can imagine that. Lan Min has them all around her tiny little finger.

That last line killed me dead. Ahahahah! Lan Min burbling some filthy sailor words!

On the other hand, this new technique of his is far more effective:

LT. JEE: She's on the ship, and if the ship sinks, everybody dies.
LAN MIN: *tries to grab shiny* ba, ba!
CREW: It's a baby awww!

Yep^^ Nothing more effective than realizing that not only would it be your fault if anything bad happened, but that Mommy would chase you across the spirit world *and* you would be guilted forever.

Zura set out with a crew assembled of sloppy leftovers and the dregs of the lot. They're kind of being hammered into something effective.

ZURA: See this? *holds out Lan Min* It's your fault she's here; it's your fault she will never be Firelord!
SAILOR: Oh thank Agni!
ZURA: *lunges and throttles him to the point where if he were alive he's have died and keeps going, because he's dead and he can take it*

I think Lan Min enjoys being the hammer to Lt. Jee's blacksmith. She's got a whole crew of people as her willing slaves.

I've recently fallen in love with Vathara's suggestion in the chapter notes for Embers that not only was Zuko's crew made of the dregs of the Navy, but that it was a rotating punishment detail, so every few months, Zuko had to deal with a fresh crop of mutineers and malcontents. No wonder the poor bastard was paranoid.

*nod* That does make plenty of sense. Let's say that in this 'verse some of her crew are that, and the majority are a core of old-timers who are either stuck permanently or choose to stay here.

They pissed off the admirals so badly they will be stuck on a useless mission with a bad tempered princess for all eternity! AHAHAHAHAH

Oooooh. No, what happens is, the ones that really piss her off, she dumps on Zhao, in whatever hellish leaky ship he's sailing eternity in.

And it's a cruise ship. Don't ask me why. But Zhao's punishment is to be in charge of a giant spiritual cruise ship that should be a sop to his ego but totally isn't.
