The Thing About Alucia
Dec. 29th, 2008 01:13 amJust a little nibble-note that I figure should get written down somewhere it's not going to get lost-
The thing about Alucia, and the Alucian empire, is that there are two different ways you can have a kingdom run. One is the traditional way- the people go by their traditions, their leaders agree to be vassals to the Emperor, the Missi Domini have the run of the land and the leaders administrate the various public projects up to Imperial standards and pay the taxes that match up to what the Imperial census-takers think is about what's owed off the predicted harvest.
The other way is what happens when those leaders fuck up once too often. Embezzlement, treason, sedition that can't be put down to simple general teasing against reasonable authority- this can cause the removal of a leader, or their being put aside as a figurehead, while Imperial governers and soldiers move in to sort things out. Some countries have gone back and forth under these two forms several times.
