Smoke.

I should like to go on record saying that while I can live with the frequent, but not constant, smell of smoke at random intervals in my home, I still object to it.

My dad's oldest friend is staying in our basment, and he smokes like a chimney.  There are connecting stairways, and the seal around the bathtub is such that from the basement, you can see the light from the bathroom through the ceiling whenever it's fallen down from water damage.  Therefore I get to smell cigarette smoke pretty constantly, despite avoiding the man and the smokeless ashtray we bought him.

The thing that's always bothered me is that *sometimes*, the smoke smells alluring, extremely pleasing.  I know that my grandmother, when she was abstaining, would occasionally lean over and enjoy the scent of someone else's tobacco.  But it varies- often, it's an appalling smell, and the alluring moments don't happen when it's as pervasive around a person as the wine-reek of an alcoholic.

And I can smell it *in my bedroom*.  I *dislike* this.  I made a specific point not to get into the standard vices and methods of early death, and the choice is being taken out of my hands.
