'Round about 3:00 AM last night, I watched a bit of Rock of Love.  It's one of those elimination shows to end up with a celebrity, this one being a guy from Poison.  It is, indeed, much like a trainwreck- painful but impossible to look away from.  And yet, at the time, I remember being entertained even as I sometimes had to mute through certain dialogue.

It's all the worst of the whole 'saying you love' instead of showing, stupid *stupid* girls (used loosely, because all of them look to be a bit shopworn) competing basically to be bed-toys, the ones who actually seem like they'd be of any use romantically or character-wise are always ignored, and the whole thing makes me think very little of both the women involved, and the guy, who- well, it's rock-star attitude, I suppose.  Sex, booze and a sympathetic ear seem to be all he wants.  I know there's nothing real about this reality show- and yet, perverse as it would be, I wonder if the guy *should* actually be looking for something like a romance, a partner or at least something like a friend.  I kept thinking that if I were writing this, or if he were attracted to musical talent or simple human competence, he'd end up with the butch-looking woman who was playing the electric guitar in the chapel when they were cycling through the girls dressed up as hooker-brides, giving gifts and reciting wedding vows they'd made.

Then again, I'm an incurable romantic, and what the show is presenting is status-games in a brothel, not romance.

The thought occured to me, as I was drifting off, was that I kept imagining there being a control-group, just some modestly dressed nerdy girl who knows the score and is just there as a contrast around which the shit-storm can swirl.  Then again, I was never iron-clad against Mary-Sueism- but just the sight of *someone* who both knows the prize they're competing for isn't necessarily a great prize and might actually have a chance in a relationship would be satisfying to me as a watcher.  And possibly a setup for tragedy, if she wasn't completely ignored but actually got his attention in between the worn-out party girls.  Or enjoyed the outings for themselves, like the farm-visit.
