Thoughts.

Now here's a funny thing.  I've used this journal for mostly my own thoughts and personal troubles/triumphs, but I've also noticed (at least in the talented and/or interesting people I watch, usually both) that there's a tendency to use the journal for fandom stuff as well.  Now- I tend to try and separate things out, put things in their appropriate places where relevant viewers will be likely to find them- but at the same time, fandom is not wholely separate from my personal musings.  In fact it takes up a whole bunch of it, but mostly just odd variants, as by the time I pick up a fandom there's usually been a lot of great art and thought put into it already, and I usually find myself simply agreeing or disagreeing with the great works, theories and efforts made before I got there.  I'm a bit of a leech.

But- well, there's nothing that makes my fandom musings any less legit, even if they tend to be more on the leavings than in the main arena.  That said, I've got some Avatar: the Last Airbender thoughts in my head.

I've made a few AMVs before- mostly Vampire Hunter D, Hellsing/Hellsing Ultimate and Gankutsuou in various combinations.  Haven't gotten a lot of good feedback on them- it seems one needs to already be very accomplished in order to get much attention, and I tend to go for very oddball/niche songs and combinations, such as my making a VHD video to Phil Ochs' version of The Highwayman, or Gankutsuou with the Count as the girl to Bob Seger's Hollywood Nights.  Now- I'm resurrecting my PC from the depths of virus-infected nuking, and am rebuilding my library and my tools with which to make such vids- and I'm looking into making some for my latest fandom, Avatar.

The big one that bit me was Billy Joel's "Downeaster Alexa", focusing on Zuko.  A fisherman on vast and dangerous waters, on a fruitless quest that many would call mad but which means everything to him- it fits.  I've been working on ripping the epsiodes with ship-related visuals, Siege of the North, The Blue Spirit for that scene where he crosses his swords under Aang's neck for "since they tell me I can't sell no stripers, and there's no luck in sword-fishing here..."

That's been the big driving bee in my bonnet getting me to hammer my PC into shape, beating my head against various frustrations (the software never works like it's supposed to, animemusicvideos.org's suite of stuff is way too advanced for my non-script-writing abilities, the upgrades to the editing stuff are always exciting to figure out).  But just now I was listening to the same CD that Downeaster Alexa's on, and I heard this-

Now, I must stress this- I DO NOT SHIP ZUTARA.  I don't tend to 'ship' very much at all, and I tend to be pretty easy and open to almost any pairing that's well-written, but I can see where Zutara is, while a pretty pairing, very much not canon.  I like Maiko, but I can see where a lot of the pairings could have been better advertised by canon rather than being givens that could be so easily pulled apart by nitpickers.

That said- this song so fits Zuko and Katara as a pairing, with possibly Mai (some love is just a lie of the heart, the cold remains of what began as a passionate start), Azula (some love is just a lie of the soul- a constant battle for the ultimate form of control) and possibly Aang (some love is just a lie of the mind- it's makebelieve until it's only a matter of time) as contrast.  I could make a pretty cool vid of that, I think.  And as soon as I get the !@$#&! editing software up and running, I'ma have a field-day with this.
