Further thought- it needs to be that Aksinya and Shaan aren't best friends at first. And they aren't together throughout the whole thing. At some point Shaan has to make the decision to ignore her aunts and advisors who say it's best not to get involved after Aksinya gets kidnapped (or leaves, after her family gets coup'ed), and rides out after her.
