I have an external hard drive which I keep anything of importance on, and the way the laptop died I was able to save most of everything else....just not my sims saves cause I forgot.

No idea why it died, computer guys says it was "bad" he can't figure it out at all. Luckily he gave me a good deal on the replacement laptop since the other one couldn't be fixed and I had invested a good amount of money all ready.
