Thoughts on Multiple Subjects

Just read some interesting stuff, going from blog to blog starting at Shakesville, which I orginally came to sideways from avatar_fans- speculation about a male sidekick to Wonder Woman, a Wonder Boy.

Lots of things were brought up as both potentially interesting and potentially problematic, including 'can a guy be introduced to a traditionally all-female space without completely screwing up what people come to it for', 'is 'Boy' a bad suffix to have for traditional racial-slur reasons' and a lot of interesting stuff about how a Wonder Boy/Guy/Warrior figure could come to be, multiple avenues from a boy being born to an Amazon and hidden (my personal fave), washing up on shore, an Amazon transitioning, someone who admires and wishes to embody those ideals that Wonder Woman embodies.

Personally, I think- if it were well done- it could be awesome, just like- when done well- female counterparts and sidekicks can be damn nifty.  I think there's definitely room for a male to admire and identify with a female symbol of Justice, and I happen to love stories where, whatever the ideals, something that happens naturally (ie the births of male children as well as female) comes about and upsets a strictly regimented setting (ie all-female society).  Upsets, perhaps changes, but doesn't destroy- the all-female space is important, but if done respectfully, I think a boy raised among the Amazons as one of them would have every intent of respecting and retaining that female space.  He'd also have his own troubles to deal with, such as that there is very little room in this world for those who feel they are one thing but are regarded as another, and those who refuse to suffer for it are often made to suffer.

I don't know enough about Wonder Woman to write fic of this- I've never read her comics.  The most I know of her canon was this old picture-book way back in kindergarten where she was competing in games on her native island, champion of the day, and then rescued this guy and came to the modern world as a nurse to take care of him.  Still- I like the idea of drawing a Wonder-Boy/Warrior, a guy who was raised as a girl and only the death of his mother kept him from keeping the charade up forever.  Not sure where he goes from there, if he's kicked out or leaves or is invited out by Wonder Woman (need to see if Terry my comics dealer can reccomend me a good collection once I've got money, see what's most likely according to the canon), but it could be neat.

What was the other subject I was thinking of... hm.  Oh yeah!  I got to talk to Gene-who-runs-my-Champions-game t'other day, at Terry's birthday celebration.  It's still up in the air whether or not the game restarts this Saturday or not, but he's promised that he has horrible stuff in store for my guy (I cannot help but think this may be in response to an email I sent him mentioning a dark secret that had occurred to me that tied up some threads of my character's background, but who knows, it could have been in place beforehand).

I take this as a gleeful good sign^^  If your character is suffering beyond just being kicked around in combat once in a while, it means you're plot relevant
